Julie Darrough succumb her battle with breast cancer on October 18, 2012.
She was a spiritual soul who valued education, graduating from the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee with a degree in teaching.
Julie was a founding member of the Pink Shawl Initiative, a tireless Board member of Indian Summer Festivals and the first Native ABCD (After Breast Cancer Diagnois)mentor.

The Wheelock Memorial Fund provides assistance for women facing financial challenges in obtaining screenings both before and after diagnosis. This program assists in matching women with mammogram services and offer financial assistance for: medical related travel, co-pay, office visits, prescriptions, and transportation.

The Sharing Shawl Gift Program is awarded annually in December.  Community members affected by breast cancer can be nominated for the Sharing Shawl Gift.  The WPSI board then selects the member that would best benefit from the annual gift.  Gift may include medical or personal care items, needed services, food, clothing and toys.

The Junior Pink Shawl Initiative was established in January 2010 as a program under the Wisconsin Pink Shawls Initiative.  The mission of the group is to raise breast cancer awareness in the American Indian community and beyond.  The Juniors were designed to develop leadership skills, self-confidence and to prepare our girls early to take responsibility for their own health.  The girls help serve as health messengers for the women in their lives.
